Mobile Communications - GPS Functionality to be Required in Japan
May 24, 2004
Japan's Telecommunications Council Committee of the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications issued a report identifying the schedule for required implementation of GPS in mobile phones.

According to the schedule, 3G phones rolled out during or after April 2007 will need to support GPS to target a user's position in case of emergency. Furthermore, the report states that by April 2009, the penetration rate of GPS phones should have reached 50%, and 90% by April 2011.

Measurement accuracy has been set at a 15-meter radius, and position information is expected to include latitude and longitude. Data will be transmitted separately from voice over a wide-area Ethernet network.
